Rangers’ Gallardo tagged for two homers in shutout loss to Mariners
Pitching: Yovani Gallardo surrendered three-run homers in the first and third innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Alex Claudio held Seattle to one hit and a walk in 1 1/3 innings, and Keone Kela and Neftali Feliz each threw a perfect inning with one strikeout apiece.
Hitting: Carlos Peguero had three of the 10 hits, including a hustling infield single to lead off the second. Jake Smolinski collected his third double and is batting .367 this spring. Thomas Field tripled in the ninth for his first extra-base hit this spring. The Rangers finished 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.
Notable: Leonys Martin, who worked on his base running in the off-season, was picked off trying to steal second in the third. ... Smolinski, imitating Ryan Rua from a few days ago, tried to dive for a sinking liner in left in the fourth, but he missed and it went for a triple. ... Martin threw out former Rangers slugger Nelson Cruz on a force at second base after Kyle Seager’s single up the middle tipped off Gallardo’s glove in the fifth. Cruz had been on first when Martin threw to Andrus for the out.
