Carlos Gomez eying weekend rehab if cleared Thursday
Rangers center fielder Carlos Gomez hopes to be in Oklahoma City Friday or Saturday night beginning his rehab assignment with Triple A Round Rock.
Gomez has been out with a right hamstring strain since May 16 (retroactive to May 15). He wore spikes and ran the bases before Wednesday’s game.
He is expected to be re-examined Thursday by team physician Dr. Keith Meister. If his hamstring has healed well enough he’ll be given the green light to join Round Rock. Right-hander Tyson Ross makes his fourth rehab start for Round Rock on Friday.
“I feel really good,” he said. Gomez suggested the he may rehab gradually, perhaps first appearing as a designated hitter, then followed with five innings in the field and increasing the innings by two until he plays a full nine-inning game. The slow build up is probably wise, Gomez said, considering how intensely he plays the outfield.
“The way I play there’s a lot of stress on my legs,” he said.
