Carlos Gomez hopes to get clearance from the Rangers for a rehab assignment on Wednesday.

Gomez has been on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain since May 16. He has been running and riding a treadmill with no issues. He expects to run the bases on Tuesday and be examined on Wednesday. If an MRI shows enough healing in the hamstring, he’s likely to start a brief rehab stint in the minors. If not, he would travel with the team to Washington for the weekend series against the Nationals. Manager Jeff Banister said Gomez has a high tolerance for pain, which could mask the precarious nature of his hamstring. They want to make sure he doesn’t make it worse and miss more time.

“Running feels really good right now,” Gomez said. “It’s better to be smart, take another week instead of losing another month. We’re being smart. I know it’s frustrating. I’m frustrated in a good way. Seeing how we’re playing and I’m on the bench not doing anything. I’m recovering faster than the doctor expected.”

Gomez said he hopes to be on a rehab assignment by the end of the week.

“If everything goes well, that’s what I’m thinking,” he said.
