Gallo’s three-run shot backs combined six-hit shutout
Pitching: Nick Martinez, competing for a rotation spot, retired the final seven batters he faced after consecutive hits put Giants at first and third with one out in the first inning. … Ross Detwiler, thought to be the No. 4 starter, shook off a liner to the right wrist to pitch two scoreless innings.
Hitting: Joey Gallo impressed with a massive three-run homer off Jake Peavy and with a single against Javier Lopez in a lefty-on-lefty matchup. “That’s a tremendous at-bat against one of the premier lefties in the National League,” manager Jeff Banister said. “There was no give in Joey in that at-bat.”
Notable: Delino DeShields Jr., who had two hits, left in the fifth inning after aggravating his right hamstring while racing to second base on a double. … X-rays were negative on Detwiler’s wrist. … Hanser Alberto was hit by a Peavy pitch and left with a bruised left triceps.
