Giants strike early and often to keep Rangers winless

Pitchers: Nick Tepesch allowed seven runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings before being pulled after 37 pitches. Tepesch said he was trying to attack hitters and force quick outs per the coaching staff’s request, but the Giants jumped on his mistakes. Shawn Tolleson allowed two runs on two doubles in one inning. Right-hander Juan Carlos Oviedo struck out the side in the sixth.

Hitters: Carlos Corporan’s single to center field in the sixth broke up the Giants’ no-hit bid. Jake Smolinski worked a walk and homered in the ninth. Jared Hoying doubled in a run in the eighth. Chris Gimenez struck out swinging twice. Rangers regulars (Leonys Martin, Shin-Soo Choo, Adrian Beltre, Prince Fielder, Rougned Odor) combined to go 0 for 10.

Notables: Third baseman Adrian Beltre looked in midseason form on a line drive that he caught between his legs while almost doing the splits. ... Rangers were held to three hits and three walks. ... Potential Rangers starting pitchers (Colby Lewis, Yovani Gallardo and Nick Tepesch) have combined to allow 17 earned runs on 18 hits in four innings in three spring training games. Giants combined for seven extra-base hits.
