Rangers promote trio to assistant GM
The Texas Rangers promoted Josh Boyd, Mike Daly and Jayce Tingler to assistant general managers, replacing Thad Levine who left to become general manager for the Minnesota Twins.
“At certain times it’s the right thing to do. In this case it illuminated how good our own people are,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. “This isn’t about promoting our own, it’s about promoting some of the best in the game.”
Josh Bonifay has been named major league field coordinator, replacing Tingler on manager Jeff Banister’s coaching staff. He’ll serve as the team’s outfield and base running coach. Bonifay spent six years in the Houston Astros’ minor league system. Last year he managed Greeneville (Tenn.) in the rookie league.
He has some history with Banister. He’s the son of former Pirates GM and current Reds special assistant Cam Bonifay. Banister spent his entire career with the Pirates before being named the Rangers’ manager after the 2014 season.
Tingler is excited about the challenge as assistant GM.
“It’s definitely going to be different,” he said. “I’m probably most excited about working with some guys I’ve worked with in the past on the minor league side.”
Daly is most likely to be in the role most similar to what Levine did as assistant GM, Daniels said. He’ll oversee major league operations and international scouting.
Boyd will oversee professional scouting, research and development, and Pacific Rim Operations. Tingler will oversee player development.
“They have been key producers and leaders in the organization for years and are ready to take on greater responsibilities setting our direction as we go forward,” Daniels said.
Other promotions include:
▪ Mike Anderson and Scot Engler: Promoted to special assistants to the general manager.
▪ Todd Walther: Promoted to director of pitching research and development.
▪ Curtis Jung: Promoted to special assignment scout.
