Texas Rangers outfielder Carlos Gomez said on Wednesday that a fan at Minute Maid Park threw a lime at him in the ninth inning Tuesday night before he successfully caught a flyball to center field for the final out.

The same fan then threw a baseball at Gomez after he had gestured at the fan.

Gomez said that Houston Astros fans had been heckling him all game. Houston released Gomez on Aug. 19 after a failed four months in the lineup this season.

“When I was going to catch ball, I saw that thing come,” Gomez said. “I thought it was a golf ball. They were screaming at me the whole game in really offensive language, but I didn’t even look at them. You can talk, but when you try to injure me, it’s not fun.”

Gomez said that he told security about the incident, which the umpiring crew saw. Had Gomez dropped the ball because of the lime, the batter, Jose Altuve, would have been called out.
