Colby Lewis encouraging in return but Rangers lose finale vs. Angels
Adrian Beltre homered twice and Colby Lewis showed encouraging signs in his first start in over two months but the Angels took the finale Sunday 3-2 at Angels Stadium.
Pitching: Yunel Escobar homered on a 2-0 pitch from Lewis to leadoff the bottom of the first and give the Angels a 1-0 lead. Kole Calhoun followed with a double to the right-field corner but Lewis struck out Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and C.J. Cron to end the inning. Andrelton Simmons homered to start the second to give the Angels a 2-1 lead. In the sixth, Simmons homered again to put the Angels up 3-2. Lewis was replaced by Dario Alvarez with one out in the sixth. He was charged with three runs on seven hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five. He threw 86 pitches (50 strikes).
Hitting: Adrian Beltre tied it at 1-1 with a solo homer to start the second inning. In the fifth, Beltre homered with two outs off Jered Weaver to tie the game at 2-2. The Rangers were held to five hits, including four against Weaver, who struck out eight and walked two in 6 2/3 innings. Three Angels relievers held Texas to one hit over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Notable: Beltre’s two homers gives him 29 this season and 442 in his career, moving him into 40th place, tied with Dave Kingman ...Beltre has at least two hits in four consecutive games and five of his past six ... It’s Beltre’s fourth multi-homer game of the season and 31st of his career ... Simmons entered Sunday’s game with one homer this season.
