Grapevine product David Fry delivers game-tying, two-out single in MLB All-Star Game
Cleveland Guardians utility man and Grapevine product David Fry never expected to be a Major League All-Star.
He built momentum in a strong second year as a pro to earn a spot on the American League roster as a reserve. Fry, a first time All-Star, played alongside the MLB’s best on Tuesday at Globe Life Field in front of family and friends.
In the third inning with the National League leading 3-2, Fry pinch hit for Houston Astros right fielder Yordan Alvarez with a runner in scoring position and two outs. He delivered a game-tying, two-out single to left field.
Fry said it felt “pretty cool” to secure the game-tying RBI.
“I didn’t think I was actually going to hit that inning and then the boys got a rally going and I was able to get a knock,” Fry said.
Texas Rangers coach Corey Ragsdale was coaching first base and shared a moment with Fry following the big hit.
“Rags, the first base coach was talking to me and he said, ‘Dude, how cool is this? You’re at home, you just gotta hit in the All-Star Game, and I was like, ‘holy cow. This is pretty incredible,’” Fry said.
The former Grapevine Mustang stayed in the game as a designated hitter. One of the hitting coaches told Fry ahead of the game that Alvarez would be pulled early, giving Fry more opportunity.
“It was something I didn’t expect, but I was super pumped,” Fry said.
In his second at-bat, Fry hit a pop up to Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner; Twins second baseman Willie Castro pinch hit for him in the eighth inning.
Fry said his All-Star experience was so much fun. He helped secure a win for the American League.
“Obviously, we were just out here having fun, and we’re trying to win,” Fry said. “But I mean, just with all these different guys – It was just such a cool experience especially with a bunch of our guys from Cleveland.”
Despite the fun he had, Fry’s favorite All-Star weekend moment didn’t come during the All-Star Game. He said he’ll remember spending time with his daughter during the Home Run Derby.
“She’s crawling around she’s in front of Hall of Famers,” Fry said. “And she’s just crawling, getting the ball. She has no idea what’s going on. Just such a cool experience.”
