UTA golf coach Deane on PGA Cup team
UT Arlington golf coach Stuart Deane will join the 10-member USA team when it faces Great Britain and Ireland in the 27the PGA Cup on Sept. 18-20 at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif.
Deane worked as a PGA teaching professional at Rolling Hills Country Club in north Arlington the past two years before being named the golf coach at UTA in June.
The PGA Cup is the premier international showcase for PGA club professionals.
Two players — Sean Dougherty of Leawood, Kan.; and Omar Uresti of Austin — made the team after Sunday’s final round of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, Wis.
The remaining eight members, including Deane, secured berths July 1 at the 48th PGA Professional National Championship at The Philadelphia Cricket Club.
The other members are Matt Dobyns of Glen Head, N.Y.; 2014 PGA Professional National Champion Michael Block of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; 2004 PGA Professional National Champion Bob Sowards of Dublin, Ohio; Jamie Broce of Ottawa Hills, Ohio; Alan Morin of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; Ben Polland of Manhasset, N.Y.; and Grant Sturgeon of Port Chester, N.Y.
The U.S. owns a 17-5-4 advantage in the competition that began in 1973, including an 11-0-2 record at home.
The United States last surrendered possession of the Llandudno International Golf Trophy in 2005 in Ireland.
