The Charles Schwab Classic is in full swing at the Colonial in Fort Worth, and this year’s winner will receive a $1.7 million prize as well as a custom-built classic car — a 1992 Schwab Defender.
Since 2019, when title sponsor Charles Schwab took over, the tournament has given away a classic car, built from the ground up, every year except the 2020 edition due to COVID-19. Each of the cars is the same color, “Schwab blue.”

Mason Reed, managing director of retail acquisition and corporate marketing at Charles Schwab, explained why the tournament started giving away classic cars.
“This is a tournament with incredible history, and they already had traditions to honor the champion. So it seemed a little bit wild when we initially had this idea, but what we were trying to do was create some new traditions for the winner,” Reed said. “Now it’s just become almost a centerpiece story of the golf tournament.”
