World’s No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler talks mindset ahead of the Charles Schwab Challenge

When the Charles Schwab Classic kicks off on Thursday, May 22, it’s no surprise that Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to win.

The Highland Park graduate is having another great season, winning his last two tournaments, including the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow on Sunday. He has finished in the top 10 seven times in 10 events this season.

“Last week was a great week,” Scheffler said. “Was fortunate to be leaving on Sunday with the with the trophy, and yeah, it’s good to be back here in Texas, playing at home because it’s a golf course that I really love and I always enjoy coming back to. So I’m looking forward to the challenge that this golf course presents.”

On Wednesday, Scheffler spoke about the Charles Schwab Challenge, a tournament he’s performed well at over the past few years.

“I just feel like it’s a unique challenge that we see on the PGA Tour,” said Scheffler. “We don’t play Bermuda grass very often, and we don’t play golf courses like this very often. So I like the challenge of more of an old school design and I think it’s just a place that hasn’t changed much over the years, and it continues to test us, and looking forward to trying to battle this place again.”

His victory at Quail Hollow was the third major championship win of his career and the first major tournament he’s won outside of the Masters, and Scheffler could win three tournaments in a row for the first time in his career if he emerges victorious at the Colonial.

This will be the second time in Scheffler’s career that he’s played in the week following winning a major championship. He hopes history will repeat itself with another victory like he achieved at RBC Heritage following his 2024 Masters win.

“My prep work for this tournament will obviously be a bit different than it normally is for an event,” he said. “I didn’t really do much yesterday or the day before. Yesterday, I went to the gym and kind of got back doing that stuff a little bit, but this is my first time on the course, and today I’m just playing nine holes and getting out of here. I’m not doing my normal practice routine, just because I need to focus more on rest than I do getting prepared for the course. Fortunately, it’s a golf course I’ve been around numerous times, and today I got a good feel.”

Scheffler, who resides in Dallas, said he’s always excited to get to play in front of a home crowd in the Metroplex.

“I think anytime I can sleep in my own bed and play golf tournament is a nice thing, and it’s really nice to be able to be here at home. And we always get great support here in the Metroplex, and it’s always fun coming back here to play Colonial, and like I said, I love the golf course here, I think it’s a great test, and so that’s also one of the big reasons I try to come to this event each year,” said Scheffler.

Scheffler will start his quest for his first Tartan jacket when he tees off at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday at the Colonial Country Club.
