Ben Griffin, Matti Schmid take lead during Charles Schwab Challenge
John Pak surged to the Schwab Challenge lead on Thursday and on Friday added a 2-under par performance, but lost his hold atop the leaderboard at Colonial Country Club.
Ben Griffin and Matti Schmid are tied at 11-under par for the lead midway through the four-day tournament.
Griffin is having one of the best seasons of his career, earning the first PGA Tour victory of his career, with five top-10 finishes. After his round, he talked about his performance in this tournament and season.
“Yeah, it was a great round. Gave myself a lot of birdie looks. Made a good chunk of those and finished strong as well,” said Griffin. “It was good to get a win a few weeks ago. It was nice to be in the top 10 [at] the PGA Championship last week. Yeah, I feel like I’ve put in a lot of work, especially in the gym this year, training really hard.”
Griffin talked about how important it was for him to have rebounded from a bogey on the fifth hole.
“It’s huge. Momentum is key in this game. It’s a very cyclical game. You kind of get on birdie runs. At least for me personally, I feel like I get on a lot of runs in tournaments. Some weeks I never get on that run, and other weeks I kind of get on a run or two,” said Griffin. “Making that putt from the fringe on six was huge just to kind of keep myself -- you know, just seeing a putt go in really from 10 to 12 feet to remind myself, alright, we’re still going, we’re still keeping the pedal down.”
Horned Frogs at Charles Schwab
Former TCU Horned Frogs Tom Hoge and Hayden Springer were in action, with Springer shooting 1-under par to improve to par for the tournament and make the projected cut, which was par.
Hoge, who shot 1-over par on Thursday, shot 1-over par again on Friday and will miss the cut.
Scottie Scheffler watch
After a strong first round, Scheffler shot one over par on Friday, with three bogeys in the second round, and one under par through the tournament’s first two rounds.
Scheffler is going for his third tournament win in a row and will have some work to do to catch up to Griffin and Schmid atop the leader board.
