Colleyville’s Campbell pulls out of PGA Tour event after testing positive for COVID-19
PGA Tour veteran and Colleyville resident Chad Campbell has withdrawn from this week’s PGA Tour event after testing positive for coronavirus, the tour announced Tuesday.
Campbell was the first alternate for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club this week. He is the sixth PGA Tour player to test positive for COVID-19 in the last two weeks.
“While the positive test result is unnerving, I am incredibly grateful to be asymptomatic and feel physically well, and my thoughts are with anyone dealing with COVID, directly or indirectly,” Campbell said in a statement. “I support the Tour’s protocol during this time and will be quarantining myself to protect others until I am well. I am looking forward to competing again once it is deemed safe for me to make my return.”
Campbell, 46, was hoping to play in his first event since missing the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth in mid-June. That marked the PGA Tour’s first event back after shutting down in mid-March amid the coronavirus pandemic.
No players or caddies tested positive while playing the event in Fort Worth.
Along with Campbell, other PGA Tour players to test positive since include Nick Watney, Cameron Champ, Denny McCarthy, Dylan Frittelli and Harris English.
The PGA Tour also announced that three players on the Korn Ferry Tour tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.
Campbell, who grew up in Andrews, made his PGA Tour debut in 1998. He’s won four PGA Tour events, but may be best remembered for his close calls at major championships. He finished second at the 2003 PGA Championship, and had another runner-up finish at the 2009 Masters, losing in a playoff.
Campbell has played in seven events this season, making just one cut.
