The PGA Tour has released a revised schedule and … Colonial remains on?

This year’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial hasn’t been canceled or postponed. At least not yet.

The PGA Tour released a revised schedule of events on Monday that included its first entry under its “summary” to say —

“TO BE CONFIRMED: June 15-21 (formerly U.S. Open week) – potential PGA TOUR event.”

Some took that to mean the PGA Tour wouldn’t be returning until at least mid-June amid the coronavirus pandemic. If that happens, it would effectively cancel or, at the very least, postpone the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club scheduled for May 21-24 in Fort Worth.

But that isn’t the case. Again, at least not yet.

The Colonial remains on schedule for now, according to the PGA Tour’s website. That was confirmed by tournament director Michael Tothe.

“We live to see another day,” Tothe said. “We’re still scheduled to play next month until we hear otherwise.”

Tothe believes a formal announcement on the Colonial and other tournaments through that June 15 date will come within the next week to 10 days.

Monday’s announcement focused mostly on the major championships and other higher-profile events.

The highlight, initially announced last week, is The Open Championship being canceled. It was scheduled for July 13-19 at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in England. This is the first Open to be canceled since none were played 1940-45 because of World War II.

The other majors have been rescheduled as well. The PGA Championship has been moved to Aug. 3-9 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco; the U.S. Open will now be Sept. 14-20 at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York; and The Masters will go from being the first major to the final one Nov. 9-15 in Augusta, Georgia.

The Ryder Cup is also on schedule for Sept. 22-27 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.

The PGA Tour announced that it could have rescheduled events during the weeks that were originally scheduled for the U.S. Open (June 15-21), The Open Championship (July 13-19) and the Olympics (July 27-Aug. 2).

If it’s not held, the Colonial could be a candidate to be played one of those new open weeks, although it seems unlikely given the Texas heat during the summer.

The AT&T Byron Nelson in Dallas, scheduled for early May, was canceled last month and a tournament spokesman said it hasn’t been contacted as a possible replacement event during those weeks.
