PGA Tour had ‘positive word of mouth’ of Trinity Forest eight months ago. Now it’s leaving
Less than eight months after the PGA Tour commissioner expressed optimism about Trinity Forest Golf Club, the AT&T Byron Nelson is changing course. Literally.
Trinity Forest will be three and done.
The Nelson announced on Sunday that it would be playing its final tournament at Trinity Forest Golf Club in 2020. Trinity Forest hosted its first tournament in 2018.
It has been a short, and problematic, tenure as host with players and fans complaining about everything from location to shade areas for fans to attendance numbers.
But, after last year’s tournament, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan still saw a positive future.
Monahan told the Star-Telegram: “We’re thrilled with the trajectory that the golf course is on with positive word of mouth.”
It’s unclear who had given Monahan the “positive word of mouth.”
In announcing the much-needed change, the PGA Tour said: “As we look towards this year’s tournament, we remain committed to making an incredible experience for our fans, sponsors, and players.”
A site for the 2021 tournament hasn’t been announced.
But, to avoid more issues with a first-time host, the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas seems like an easy choice. Or at least should be.
It had been host to the Nelson for years before the head-scratching move to Trinity Forest.
This year’s AT&T Byron Nelson is scheduled for May 7-10.
