Tarrant County golf pros seek U.S. Open berths in Dallas
Despite overnight rains, play has begun in Monday’s 36-hole sectional qualifier for the U.S. Open at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas.
A total of 58 golfers are entered, competing for three spots in the field at Erin Hills Golf Course in Hartford, Wisc., site of the 2017 U.S. Open. The Open runs June 15-18 and Lakewood Country Club is one of multiple sites holding sectional qualifiers this week for golfers hoping to play their way into the field.
Among the notable names competing at Lakewood are PGA Tour participants Ryan Palmer, Hunter Mahan and Martin Flores as well as Web.com participant Martin Piller. All four of those golfers competed in the Dean & DeLuca Invitational during the final week of May at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.
Notable amateurs in the field included Fort Worth resident Major Monzingo and Plano’s Will Zalatoris, a Wake Forest golfer who was among the 10 semifinalists for the 2017 Ben Hogan Award, given to the nation’s top college golfer.
