Arlington Lamar football coach talks prep football recruiting at Colonial

Arlington Lamar football coach Laban Delay praised his top recruit — senior defensive lineman Bobby Brown — and how he’s handled the recruiting process.

“He’s taken the recruiting part really well,” said Delay, who was attending the Dean & DeLuca Invitational at Colonial on Saturday where Lamar had a booth. “I told him at the beginning, ‘don’t get a big head about it’ and he hasn’t.”

“He treats everyone with respect, no matter who comes through the door.”

Brown holds 16 offers, including 15 from Power Five conference teams, according to 247Sports.

“He won’t tell any secrets and he’ll let us know who he’s thinking about,” Delay said. “I’m sure, up in his head, he’s got his top five or top 10, but he’s keeping it close to his vest right now.”

The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Brown is a four-star recruit. He picked up offers from Florida State and Arkansas this week. Alabama’s Nick Saban gave him a call on Friday.

“They talked for 30 minutes,” Delay said. “Bobby didn’t say a whole lot — it was Saban that did all the talking.”

Drive time

All week long, fans have been using Uber to get to the Dean & DeLuca Invitational.

Vehicles pull up near the tee at No. 2 to drop off and pick up people. From there, they come through security and bag checks before hitting the course.

There has been improvement running the Uber station — in its second year at Colonial — but the toughest part remains getting people to the cars once they leave the tournament.

On Sunday morning, cars were quickly lined up as fans were filling in. The tee times were pushed back to 10:14 a.m., but there was a noticeable surge around 1 p.m.

Along with an Uber tent, where sunglasses were being passed out, lyft — another transportation company — was based near the No. 2 hole.
