The U.S. men’s soccer team has turned “Take Me Home, Country Roads” into its anthem during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the song playing after victories, being embraced by fans and players alike.

While the song extols the values of West Virginia, the song’s writer, music superstar John Denver, was born in New Mexico, lived in in Fort Worth’s Western Hills neighborhood and graduated from Arlington Heights High School.
If you see somebody complain about hearing “Take Me Home Country Roads” after soccer matches, remind them that John Denver’s “home” wasn’t West Virginia, it was the Western Hills neighborhood of Fort Worth. @visitFortWorth@musicFortWorth (Plaque at the Heights auditorium.) pic.twitter.com/BzfCsDdAyE

The son of an Air Force veteran, Denver was one of the biggest music stars of the 1970s and ‘80s. “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” released in 1971, was certified platinum and became the state anthem of West Virginia.
Denver died in a plane crash in 1997.

FIFA executive Amy Hopfinger, who spent 18 years with U.S. Soccer, selected the song to play after U.S. victories, according to the Athletic, and it quickly caught on.
“That song’s popular all over the world,” U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, who grew up in London, told the Athletic.
“To see the guys enjoying themselves, and singing along with it,” U.S. captain Tim Ream said, “it’s one of those moments where you look up and you’re like: ‘Is this real life?’”
The U.S. plays Belgium in the round of 16 at 7 p.m. Monday in Seattle.
