Many soccers fans took their lunch breaks in Sundance Square on Tuesday to watch Ivory Coast and Norway face off in the World Cup’s round of 32 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 to advance to the round of 16 to face Brazil at 3 p.m. Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Sundance Square wasn’t as packed as it has been for some matches, but many fans could be seen coming from their various offices in downtown Fort Worth.
Typical soccer attire wasn’t seen. Although some fans had jerseys, most spectators were in the business casual clothing of their professions.
Norway forward Antonio Nusa opened the scoring in the game in the 39th minute thanks to a curler into the top right corner of the goal that resulted in a small roar in Sundance Square.
Much of crowd left when the halftime whistle was blown. The square featured three broadcast areas, with one under the canopy, one next to the fountains and one in the street. The broadcast with the canopy was the most populated.
The square still featured a bar and many food trucks, and all the restaurants around were still open. The canopy area featured reserved seating that was blocked off with more seats for fans to sit and watch the game in the shade.
Ivory Coast ended up equalizing thanks to a goal from forward Amad Diallo, but Norway retook the lead for good on a tap-in from star forward Erling Haaland.
The square will remain open for the remainder of the World Cup, with big matches on tap. Mexico faces Ecuador at 8 p.m. Tuesday, then the U.S. takes on Bosnia-Herzegovina at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
