With the 2026 FIFA World Cup underway, AT&T Stadium has undergone drastic changes to accommodate FIFA rules, which include having a grass field instead of turf and tint on the windows of the stadium to help with the glare from the sun.
Injuries from turf have been a long-term concern of NFL players. Since the stadium already has made the switch to grass for the World Cup, could the Dallas Cowboys make the change permanent to help out the players?
Cowboys wide receiver and kick returner KaVontae Turpin is a strong advocate for the switch.
“I would like it leaguewide,” he said. “A lot of people get injured on turf. You know, you get stuck on turf and trying to get out and in your cuts. It’s bad for your knees. So I feel like the league should make every field a grass field. That’s how it was growing up. That’s how it was in college.”
Fifteen NFL stadiums have turf, while the other half has grass.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer remained confident in the turf at the stadium and joked how World Cup participants don’t get the full experience of the stadium without the glare.
“We feel like AT&T gives us a great home-field advantage, and the turf is what it is,” he said. “We feel like it’s one of the best turf surfaces in the league. Suddenly, they had the blinders up, the shades, so it’s not majestic as it is. The grass and the shade, it’s not as majestic. They are going to miss the experience.”
The stadium has become notorious for the glare and has been seen to affect receivers during games. FIFA reportedly was going to use curtains to block the sun during some matches at AT&T Stadium but ended up using window tint.
“I hear a lot of receivers saying they have a glare in their eye in the stadium, so that might help us out, but I’m just going to go out there and play on,” Cowboys running back Javonte Williams said.
The Cowboys are in the middle of their mandatory minicamp at their facility in Frisco, where they use a grass field instead of turf. They will continue the minicamp on Wednesday and will wrap up on Thursday.
