How does the draw work?

Forty-eight teams will compete in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico starting on June 11 for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The final match will be in New York at MetLife Stadium on July 19.

The draw will select from four pots. The 48 nations are placed into four different groups of 12, based on their world rankings. The draw selects from each of the four pots to randomly determine the first round: the group stage round.

The U.S., along with Canada and Mexico, is part of pot one, which also had the top nine nations. This is because the U.S. is one of the hosting countries. This will mean the U.S. has a chance of playing fewer stronger teams in the first round.
