Week five of the Texas high school football season is rapidly approaching, and there will be plenty of interesting matchups.

Here are five storylines to keep an eye on in the greater Fort Worth-area:

Colleyville Heritage vs. Argyle: Two teams with a history

Colleyville Heritage and Argyle arguably had the best playoff game of the 2023 Texas high school football season.

In the final 4:32 of the Region Two Semifinal, Heritage erased a 10-point deficit. Wide receiver Braden Bluitt caught a go-ahead touchdown to win the game. Surely, the loss still stings for Argyle.

Colleyville Heritage and Argyle’s rematch will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Eagle Stadium in Argyle.

The Eagles are No. 5 in the Star-Telegram Class 5A rankings, while the Panthers are right in front of them. Colleyville Heritage has seen success with a win over Mansfield Timberview, but the Panther offense has seen better days.

Argyle also has a win over Timberview, and the Eagles scored 14 more points. The key for Heritage’s offense will be offensive consistency; if the Panthers can find it, they’ll be hard to stop.

Unlike the Eagles and Panthers’ playoff game last year, this game might be a lower-scoring, defensive battle. Every possession will be crucial in a game that could play a role in the District 3-5A Division II title.

Euless Trinity to take on Byron Nelson

Euless Trinity lost to Southlake Carroll in week four, but the Trojans’ offense was extremely productive in a back-and-forth thriller. Despite the loss, Euless Trinity passed Byron Nelson in the Star-Telegram’s Class 6A rankings.

The Bobcats, another team that lost to Southlake Carroll, have a big opportunity to get back on track this Friday. Trinity and Byron Nelson will clash at 7 p.m. at Northwest ISD Stadium.

One player to watch for Euless Trinity is quarterback TJ Tupou, who accounted for four total touchdowns against Southlake Carroll. Also, keep an eye on Byron Nelson’s all-around, versatile two-way star, Leo Almanza.

The Bobcats are coming off a bye week, which will be useful with a physical opponent like Trinity on the schedule.

The game will have big implications in the District 4-6A playoff race. Even if Carroll holds first place the rest of the season, Byron Nelson and Trinity can still fight for second place.

Carroll will be a heavy favorite for the rest of the regular season, but you never know what can happen in the hectic world of Texas high school football. An upset win for Keller Timber Creek on Friday at Dragon Stadium would send District 4-6A into an all-out frenzy.

Can Crowley get back on track?

Crowley (1-3) had an extremely tough non-district slate and is looking to get back on track against Weatherford on Friday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Kangaroo Stadium.

With three consecutive losses, Crowley has fallen to No. 10 in the Star-Telegram’s Class 6A rankings.

Crowley has tons of talent, including quarterback Caleb Williams and wide receiver Antayvious Ellis. Expectations are high this season; the Eagles still have plenty of time to get back on track, with the District 3-6A schedule providing plenty of opportunities.

The non-district performance wasn’t ideal for the Eagles, but at the end of the day, the district schedule is what matters most.

The 25 remaining undefeated teams

Only 25 Texas high school football teams within the Fort Worth-area are undefeated heading into week five.

Nine teams are undefeated in Class 6A: Mansfield, North Crowley, Southlake Carroll, Keller Timber Creek, Justin Northwest, Flower Mound, Flower Mound Marcus, Coppell, and Duncanville.

Southlake Carroll and Keller Timber Creek will collide at 7 p.m. on Friday at Dragon Stadium.

In Class 5A, only six teams are without a loss: Richland, Ryan, Arlington Heights, Chisholm Trail, Joshua, Saginaw and Arlington Seguin. The Class 4A squads without a loss are Lampasas, Stephenville, Alvarado, Brock, Mineral Wells and Benbrook.

Arlington Heights and Chisholm Trail will face off at Chisholm Trail at 7 p.m. on Friday. Only one team will remain undefeated and will secure an advantage in the District 4-5A Division I playoff race.

In the 11-man private school scene, Fort Worth All Saints, Pantego Christian and Arlington Oakridge are undefeated.
