Prosper goes for the win as 2-point conversion spoils Euless Trinity home opener

Jackson Berry found Cameron Harpole in the corner of the end zone for the go-ahead 2-point conversion midway through the fourth quarter and Prosper defeated Euless Trinity, 29-21, in a Class 6A Top-25 non-district match-up Thursday night at Pennington Field.

No. 21 Trinity (1-1) scored one play into the final period to grab a 21-14 lead on Gary Maddox’s 10-yard run and the defense forced No. 20 Prosper (2-0) to a three-and-out. But disaster struck on Trinity’s ensuing possession when a punt attempt was blocked by Prosper’s Mason Jolley.

The ball traveled back 35 yards to set the Eagles up with first-and-goal at the 2.

Two plays later, Jolley was rewarded with his efforts with a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:04 left to play. The Berry-to-Harpole connection turned a 21-20 deficit into a 22-21 lead.

The Trojans reached the Prosper 33 before penalties stalled their drive. An incomplete pass on fourth-and-8 turned the ball over to the Eagles with under a minute remaining.

Noah Billings sealed the deal with a 52-yard TD run.

Prosper, which will play at No. 10 DeSoto Oct. 9, gained 241 yards of total offense. Berry was 9 of 15 for 146 yards and a TD. Billings rushed six times for 61 yards and Harpole made four catches for 51 yards and a TD.

The Trojans showcased a classic Trinity drive when they ate up nearly seven minutes off the clock during their first offensive possession. They converted two fourth downs before crossing midfield, but punted on a fourth-and-9 at their 42.

It didn’t take long for Trinity to get the football back as Prosper couldn’t handle a snap at its own 45. The ball bounced back 10 yards before Trinity’s Nai Mose recovered and returned it 24 yards to the 12.

A penalty pushed Trinity back to the Prosper 27 and after lining up for a 30-yard field goal, the hold wasn’t secure and the Trojans turned the ball over on downs.

The Trojans finally put points on the scoreboard in the second quarter after a 10-play, 63-yard drive that lasted over 4 1/2 minutes. Quarterback Valentino Foni hit Xzavior Kautai for 18 yards on a third-and-8 and Foni capped the drive with an 18-yard keeper to put Trinity on top 7-0.

But Prosper responded on Jolley’s 3-yard run that tied the game with 1:06 left before intermission. The big play came on a 52-yard pass from Berry to Fisher Naumann to set up the first-and-goal.

Pofele Ashlock returned the third-quarter kickoff 48 yards to help set up Trinity’s next scoring drive, a 19-yard TD pass from Foni to Kautai for a 14-7 lead with 8:16 left in the quarter.

Prosper tied the game at 14 on its next drive when Berry hit Harpole on a 4-yard pass three minutes later.

Trinity, which will play Boswell Oct. 16, gained 286 yards. Foni accounted for 164 yards passing and a team-high 74 yards rushing. Max Bosilikwa led the team with 66 yards on six receptions.
