Running game helps Mansfield Timberview power past Lake Ridge with two late scores
Two late fourth-quarter scores from running backs Deuce Jones and Jarvis Reed propelled Mansfield Timberview to a 28-14 victory over Mansfield Lake Ridge in both teams’ 5A season opener Thursday night at Newsom Stadium.
Jones led the rushing attack, finishing with 142 yards. Reed added 70 to help the running game amass 244 yards.
Both teams had a sluggish start before Timberview (1-0) scored first when quarterback Simeon Evans’ connected with Titus Evans on a 35-yard strike early in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead.
Lake Ridge (0-1) couldn’t muster much offense until late in the first half when running back Tennton Johnson tied the game with a 2-yard run.
Timberview then grabbed a 14-7 halftime lead after Simeon Evans again found Titus Evans for a 19-yard score. Simeon Evans finished with two TD passes and 197 yards through the air.
After a scoreless third quarter, Lake Ridge recovered a fumble and then drove 52 yards in eight plays, including a fourth-and-8, to tie the score at 14. Quarterback Trevor Andrews capped the drive with a 5-yard scoring pass to Kamdon McFarland.
Timberview took the lead for good on its following possession, thanks mostly to Jones. He had 70 rushing yards on the drive, including a 54-yard romp, to give the Wolves a 21-14 lead.
The defense forced a punt before Reed helped seal the deal with a 1-yard scoring run.
