Fort Worth Dunbar’s offense explodes in district opening win over FW Eastern Hills
In the span of two minutes and 55 seconds, Fort Worth Dunbar turned a seven-point lead into a 28-0 advantage and the Wildcats went on to a 61-14 win over Fort Worth Eastern Hills Friday at Farrington Field in their District 6-4A Division I opener.
The Wildcats (2-0 overall, 1-0 district) proved too much for the Highlanders (1-1, 0-1) on both sides of the ball. Dunbar finished with 450 yards of offense to Eastern Hills’ 175 yards.
Dunbar’s offense was anchored by running back Miguel Cook and quarterback Dorian Carr. The duo combined for six scores on the night. Cook, who finished with 117 yards rushing on 16 carries, ran for three scores and Carr threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another. Carr carried eight times for 103 yards and threw for 80 yards.
Cook gave Dunbar a 7-0 lead on the first possession of the game thanks to an 18-yard run. With 1:33 to play in the first quarter, the Wildcats went up 14-0 on a 15-yard run by Carr.
The Wildcats’ special team scored the next points when Trevon Gray-McCoy scooped up a botched punt attempt and scored from 16 yards out. A fumble at the Eastern Hills 4 led to another Wildcats’ score as Dariante Hall found the end zone from a yard out for a 28-0 lead.
The Highlanders lone score of the first half came on a 1-yard run by Davionte Collins.
The Wildcats countered with three scores to close out the first half with a 48-6 lead. Carr hit Montavis Thomas for a 3-yard TD. Carr then added scoring runs of one and 30 yards.
In the second half, Dunbar scored twice as Carr connected with Thomas for a 43-yard TD and Dariante Hall broke free for a 63-yard scoring run. Hall had a nice night with seven carries for 76 yards.
The Highlanders cut the lead to 61-14 on a 40-yard pass from Collins to Brian Faggans. Collins ended the night with 73 yards rushing on 13 carries and 65 yards passing.
Dunbar plays Fort Worth Carter-Riverside Thursday while Eastern Hills at Kennedale Friday Sept. 25.
