Grandview, Jentsch dominate Godley. Zebras hand Wildcats first loss of the season
Dane Jentsch threw six touchdown passes to lead the two-time defending Class 3A DI state champion Grandview Zebras to a 41-7 win Friday at Godley.
In the first half alone, Jentsch threw for 272 yards and five touchdowns, completing passes to eight different receivers in the process. With Jentsch and the Zebra offense firing on all cylinders, Grandview’s defense shut down Godley to build a 34-0 lead at halftime.
No. 2 Grandview (3-0) then opened the third quarter with an efficient four-play drive — including three rushes by Gavin Leftwich for 64 yards — to extend its lead to 41-0 on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jentsch to Luke Ferguson, his third of the night.
Jentsch ended the game with 283 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.
Grandview sophomore receiver Kason English had a big night, all of which came in the first half with seven receptions for 157 yards and two touchdowns.
The Zebras had two players rush for at least 100 yards. Leftwich finished with 135 rushing yards on 11 carries while J.J. Castillo added 102 rushing yards on 23 carries, with most of that coming in the second half.
Grandview opened the scoring on a 25-yard TD pass from Jentsch to Leftwich for a 7-0 lead with 5:37 left in the opening quarter.
Then disaster struck for Godley (2-1) as the Wildcats fumbled on the ensuing kickoff. Two plays later, the Zebras scored on a 25-yard TD reception by Ferguson. In less than 50 seconds, Grandview turned a scoreless game into a 14-0 lead.
The Grandview defense forced Godley into its third consecutive three-and-out, and the Zebras extended their lead to 21-0 on a 13-yard pass from Jentsch to English with 1:45 left in the opening frame.
Jentsch added TD passes of 7 yards to Ferguson and 43 yards to English in the second quarter to build an insurmountable lead.
Kolby Bartlett got the Wildcats on the board with 2:37 left on a 16-yard run. Bartlett finished with 60 rushing yards on 15 carries while Parker Priddy hauled in three catches for 69 yards.
Grandview out-gained Godley in total yardage, 516-173. Godley came in averaging 55.5 points and 516 yards through the first two games.
The Zebras are scheduled to host Glen Rose while the Wildcats are set to host Springtown in Week 4 action.
