All-out offensive surge sends Lake Worth past Fort Worth Western Hills
In what has been an ongoing trend in a number of games so far this season, the winning team inauspiciously got off to a slow start, but once it got its offense – and defense — in gear, things snowballed from there.
In this case, the winning team was Lake Worth (2-1) and their opponent, Fort Worth Western Hills (0-2), struggled in a non-district Class 4A contest at Kittrell Memorial Stadium Friday night. The Bullfrogs rolled to a 56-7 victory.
Lake Worth spotted the Cougars a 7-0 first-quarter lead, then went on to score five touchdowns in as many possessions for a 35-7 halftime lead. All of the Bullfrog scores came in the second quarter.
Big fullback Kamron Kimble bulled his way up the middle or off-tackle from close range, three yards or less, for three touchdowns. Teammate Brandon Forrest scored the other two, one a 66-yard pass from quarterback Caleb Welch and other rushing from 18 yards out around right side untouched. Welch was 19 of 28 for 358 yards.
Western Hills opened the scoring with a 1-yard run by Jason Green to end a 7-play, 88-yard drive with 1:40 left in the first quarter. After the 7-0 lead, the Cougars stopped Lake Worth on the ensuing drive at its 48-yard line. But the punt was bobbled and Raul Alvarez recovered for the Bullfrogs at the Cougar 33.
Six plays later, Kimble scored from the 3 to knot the score at 7 with 8:38 left in the half.
From there, Western Hills collapsed.
Welch found Forrest open downfield for the 66-yard TD and a 14-7 lead with 6:30 left in the half. Lake Worth’s third touchdown also came on the first play from scrimmage after a turnover. Craig Williams, one of the heroes in Week 1, recovered a WHHS fumble and Forrest scored on the subsequent play for a 21-7 Bullfrog lead.
Forrest again scored on the first play from scrimmage on the first play of the second half with a 75-yard touchdown reception. He and Kimble had all of the Bullfrog touchdowns with four apiece. Kimble added another score in the second half, an 8-yard TD catch. Isiah Hall had two interceptions in the second half for Lake Worth. Teammate Abraham Pulido was good on all eight extra points.
Forrest led all receivers with 159 yards on four catches. Teammate Mark Fulkerson contributed with 96 yards on seven receptions. Lake Worth travels to Venus in Week 4 while Western Hills takes on Diamond Hill-Jarvis on Thursday at Clark Stadium in a District 6-4A Division I opener.
