Fort Worth Dunbar shuts down Dallas Life Oak Cliff in football season opener

It took awhile for Fort Worth Dunbar to start its 2020 high school football schedule, but the Wildcats got off the right foot with a 20-0 victory over Dallas Life Oak Cliff in the season opener for both teams on Friday at Clark Stadium.

The Wildcats (1-0) will begin District 6-4A Division I action against Eastern Hills (1-0) Sept. 18 at Farrington Field.

Junior quarterback Dorian Carr had an efficient season debut, rushing for 137 yards on 20 carries while adding 61 yards on 6 of 9 passing and one touchdown.

Dunbar dominated the time of possession in the first half as the Wildcats ran 36 plays for 217 yards while Life Oak Cliff was held to one yard on 11 plays.

After a scoreless first quarter, Dunbar scored two touchdowns in the second to grab a 14-0 halftime lead.

The Wildcats went 66 yards on six plays and were capped off by a 24-yard touchdown pass from Carr to senior wide receiver Michael Banks with 11:11 left in the period.

Then Dunbar ate up eight minutes off the clock on its second TD drive. Carr rushed six times for 51 yards and the Wildcats went 80 yards on 14 plays to grab a 14-0 lead with 40 seconds on the clock.

Junior running back Markyiden James capped off the possession with a 1-yard scoring run.

The Lions (0-1) dominated the third-quarter, but couldn’t score any points. They gained 62 yards on 15 plays, but their first second-half drive stalled with four minutes left in the frame.

They had another chance when Dunbar fumbled the next play from scrimmage, but again LOC turned the ball over on downs. Dunbar added the final touches with a Dariante Hall 6-yard TD run with 5:30 remaining.

Dunbar gained 313 yards of total offense on 55 plays. The Wildcats rushed 46 times for 262 yards. James had 53 yards on 11 carries and Hall added 50 yards rushing. Banks made four catches for 51 yards and picked off a LOC pass attempt in the fourth quarter.

Life Oak Cliff, which will host Newman International Cedar Hill Sept. 18, did much better after halftime. The Lions finished with 98 yards of offense on 37 plays. Senior Elijah Sheppard led the way with 41 yards rushing.
