Dominating team effort over Nevada Community leads to win for state-ranked Brock

Brock overcame a slow start that included penalties and pair of lost fumbles to overwhelm Nevada Community, 66-7, Friday night in non-district action.

Cash Jones was the leading ball carrier for Brock with 175 yards on 15 carries and a pair of touchdowns. Teammate Chris Palfreeman had three TDs: one rushing, one reception, and a third by way of an interception return. The latter was returned 70 yards in the fourth quarter.

Starting quarterback Jaxon Gleaton threw for two touchdowns and backup Tyler Moody tossed for another.

Besides Palfreeman, who caught his TD for 40 yards, Eli Potts had one from 45 yards down the left sideline and Nathan Jones caught a 7-yard rollout from Moody in the back corner of the end zone. Myles Semas and Tyler Riddle also had touchdown runs for Brock (2-0).

The Eagles only led 2-0 after one quarter thanks to a safety when Community quarterback Paul Testa fumbled on the exchange from center from his 2-yard line and recovered the ball in the end zone. It was one of two safeties scored by the Eagles.

Brock didn’t score its first TD until its fifth possession. Semas patiently waited for his blocks to be set up, then meandered through the middle of the field dodging tackles for the 39-yard score. It came six plays after Community gambled on a fake punt and failed to convert from the Brock 44 on fourth-and-4. It made the score, 8-0, with 8:24 left in the first half.

Community (0-2) fumbled six times, losing three. Two were when Testa was pressured and sacked. With a short field to work with, Brock was able to take advantage both times scoring touchdowns on drives of 28 and 7 yards.

Leading 23-0 with only 48 seconds left in the first half, Brock was able to tag on another score before intermission via trick play. With the ball at the Eagle 37-yard line, Gleaton set the ball down behind center after taking the snap and faked a handoff. What’s known as a fumbleroosky, Palfreeman picked up the live ball in the confusion, then sprinted down the left side for the score and a 30-0 Brock halftime lead.

Community’s Testa completed only one pass out of nine attempts, a 55-yarder downfield to a streaking Jonathan Norris, who caught it in stride and outraced his defender to complete the 80-yard score.

Brock held Community’s running game in check with only 50 yards on 38 attempts. Testa was sacked five times. Brock had 523 yards of offense. The Eagles have a bye in Week 3, but are back in action Friday, Sept. 18, at Iowa Park. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Community travels to Paris to take on North Lamar on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.
