Frisco Lone Star senior receiver Marvin Mims wove his way into the fabric of Texas high school football lore on the Rangers’ second play of the second half Friday night.

Running down the near sideline, Mims hauled in a pass from sophomore quarterback Garret Rangel and raced 63 yards to the end zone — and the record books.

With the catch, Mims surpassed Stephenville’s Cody Cardwell as the state’s single-season pass catcher. Mims, who caught 10 passes for 214 yards and two scores, has 2,486 yards receiving this season. Cardwell amassed 2,427 yards for the Yellow Jackets in 1998.

Mims, an Oklahoma recruit, can add to his total next week thanks to the Rangers’ 38-20 victory over Lancaster in a Class 5A Division I Region II final at Rockwall’s Sanders Memorial Stadium.

Lone Star (14-0) will face the winner of Saturday’s game between Denton Ryan (13-0) and Colleyville Heritage (9-4) in a state semifinal. The Rangers last reached the state semifinals in 2015, when they defeated Lake Dallas 55-49.

Mims’ second touchdown of the game gave the Rangers a 31-13 lead with 10:41 to play in the third quarter. It was Rangel’s fourth touchdown pass of the game. The sophomore completed 20 of 29 passes for 315 yards.

Lancaster (11-3) was able to close to within 31-20 on an 11-yard scoring toss from Glenn Rice Jr. to Majik Rector with 4:14 left in the third quarter. And the Tigers made things interesting in the fourth quarter, moving the ball to the Lone Star 14. But Rice was forced out of bounds for a 9-yard loss on fourth and 2.

Lancaster’s next two possessions ended with interceptions. Lone Star put the game out of reach late when Jake Bogden scored on a 24-yard run.

Two plays into the game, Lone Star grabbed a 7-0 lead when Mims hauled in an 84-yard touchdown pass from Rangel.

Lancaster worked the clock on its first possession as the Tigers turned to their running game. Bradford carried five times for 31 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown run with 7:28 to play in the first quarter that tied the game at 7.

The Tigers converted a fourth and 6 on the play before Bradford’s score with a 6-yard run by Glenn Rice Jr. Bradford finished the game with 25 carries for 120 yards.

The Rangers went up 14-7 with 5:04 to play in the first quarter on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Rangel to Trace Bruckler.

The Tigers answered with an 8-yard touchdown run by Bradford, but the point-after attempt failed, leaving Lancaster down 14-13 early in the second quarter.

Lone Star scored the final 10 points of the half to take a 24-13 lead. Brandon Spencer went high for a Rangel pass and raced to the end zone for a 34-yard score. And with 28.7 seconds before halftime, Josh Click had a 39-yard field goal.
