Southlake Carroll racks up commanding lead over Midland Lee before running out clock

Southlake Carroll jumped out to a 35-0 lead in the first half behind the play of quarterback Quinn Ewers and never looked back, as the Dragons waylaid Midland Lee 49-27 on Saturday in a Class 5A Division I Region I semifinal game at P.E. Shotwell Stadium.

Ewers had a big night for the Dragons with four touchdown passes and two rushing scores. The sophomore also completed 25 of 30 passes for 360 yards.

The Dragons (13-0) will face Duncanville next weekend in the regional final at a time, site and date to be determined. Duncanville defeated Carroll 51-7 in the regional finals last season.

Carroll finished the game with 532 yards of offense (363 yards passing, 164 rushing). The Dragons also scored on five of their first six possessions in the first half.

Ewers opened the scoring with a 14-yard run. He then threw four touchdown passes.

Blake Smith caught a pair of touchdown passes of 8 and 11 yards, and Brady Boyd hauled in an 11-yard scoring pass. Smith finished with six catches for 93 yards and three scores. Boyd had a huge game for the Dragons, hauling in nine passes for 170 yards and a score.

Owen Allen capped Carroll’s first-half scoring with a 5-yard run that put the Dragons up 35-0 with 5:01 to play.

Midland Lee (11-2) answered with a 66-yard scoring run by Trent Low and a 1-yard run from Karl Taylor that got the Rebels to within 35-13 at halftime.

Carroll turned to its running game in the second half and ate the clock.

But facing fourth and 11 at the Lee 37 on the Dragons’ first possession of the second half, Ewers hit Smith for a 33-yard gain to the Rebels’ 4. Three plays later, Ewers scored from 2 yards out for a 42-13 lead.

The Dragons added their final score of the game after a 45-yard interception return by Graham Faloona on the Rebels’ ensuing possession. This time, Ewers hit Smith for a 5-yard score that put Carroll up 49-13.

Lee added a pair of scores in the fourth quarter thanks to an 18-yard pass from Shemar Davis to Christian Romero. In the final minute, Ryan Quiroz scored on an 8-yard run.

The Rebels’ offense accounted for 438 yards, including 251 yards rushing and 187 passing.
