Turnovers doom Burleson Centennial in loss to unbeaten Frisco Reedy
SOUTHLAKE – Burleson Centennial couldn’t get out of its own way in the first half of its Class 5A Division II Region II regional semifinal game with Frisco Reedy at Dragon Stadium on Friday.
The Spartans turned the ball over on four of their first five possessions of the game and Reedy took full advantage to take a 20-0 halftime lead and go on to a 34-7 win over the Spartans.
Reedy (13-0) scored two touchdowns and converted a pair of field goals to take a 20-0 lead into halftime. Will Harbour hit field goals of 36 and 30 yards and also scored on a 29-yard run. Lions’ quarterback Josh Foskey added the other score on a 6-yard run.
Centennial (11-1) ran 10 plays in the first half and tallied 34 yards (four rushing, 27 passing). The Spartans lost three fumbles and had an interception in the first half.
Reedy had 201 yards of offense on 35 plays in the first half (125 rushing, 76 passing).
The loss was the Spartans second in the regional semifinals in four seasons. Centennial lost to Canyon Randall, 35-7, in 2015 in the regional semifinals. The loss also snapped the Spartans nine-game win streak.
Game was over when: After the Spartans scored on their first possession of the second quarter on a 39-yard run by Jeff Kirven it seemed as if Centennial had gotten back into the game at 20-7. After forcing stopping the Lions on fourth down, the Spartans moved to the Reedy 31 on a 35-yard pass from Kyle Burns to Chris Mosley. Then the game was halted by a 1 hour and 51-minute lightning delay. When the game resumed the Spartans lost all momentum losing nine yards on the next three plays.
Play of the game: Facing a fourth-and-four at the Centennial 29, Harbour took a direct snap and ran right. He broke free down the sideline and scored. The touchdown gave the Lions a 20-0 lead with 6:01 to play in the second quarter.
Offensive player of the game: Reedy running back Michael Ferrara was tough all night. The senior carried 22 times for 129 yards.
Defensive player of the game: Reedy’s Cesar Sandoval recovered a pair of fumbles in the second to end consecutive possessions for the Spartans.
What’s next? Reedy will take on the winner of the Aledo-Dallas South Oak Cliff game in the Region II finals next weekend.
