Mansfield Timberview falls behind early, rallies to upend The Colony in bi-district
After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Mansfield Timberview came roaring back with 21 unanswered points to take a lead at halftime and then prevail, 35-30, over The Colony in a 5-A Division I bi-district playoff game Friday at Tommy Briggs Cougar Stadium.
After The Colony jumped out to its lead, Timberview responded with a stunning 93-yard kickoff return by Deuce Jones to turn the momentum.
The Wolves kept driving the ball with large gashes by Montaye Dawson and Stacy Sneed.
It was a 35-yard dash by Sneed that tied the game at 14 and then a 38-yard strike to Dawson from Timberview quarterback Darnell Jones put the Wolves ahead by a touchdown.
The Colony scores were two big plays by QB Mikey Harrington, the first a long pass on the Cougars’ first play from scrimmage, 29 yards to Myles Prince and then a 41-yard run on The Colony’s next possession. The Cougars narrowed the deficit to 21-17 when Kevin Albarron hit a 37-yard field goal just before halftime.
In the second half, the Wolves’ defense stiffened behind the pass rush of Raam Stevenson and Blake Shepard and held The Colony to no completed passes on 10 attempts. Sneed dominated with his rushing that accounted for 234 yards on 21 carries and two TDs.
Game was over when: The Colony’s 4th-and-9 pass fell incomplete with just under three minutes to play.
Play of the game: A 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter by Deuce Jones that turned the tide of the game.
Offensive player of the game: Stacy Sneed with 234 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Defensive player of the game: Timberview defensive end Raam Alexander who sacked and harassed The Colony quarterback Mikey Harrington all of the game, especially in the second half.
Unsung hero of the game: Timberview QB Darnell Jones who managed the Wolves offense with 82 yards passing and 20 yards rushing.
Moment of the game: Sneed breaking free into The Colony secondary on repeated occasions in the second half.
Stat of the Game: Timberview not allowing a pass completion in the second half.
Big picture outlook: Although 6-5 for the season, Timberview moves on in the 5-A Division 1 Playoffs.
