Arlington Lamar goes off for 34 points in second quarter to rout San Angelo Central

Arlington Lamar got all the scoring it would need in the second quarter of Friday’s Class 6A Division I bi-district game at Cravens Field, erupting for 34 points in an 11-minute period to propel the Vikings to a convincing 55-14 win over San Angelo Central.

The Vikings (10-1) responded to Central’s only score of the first half with a series of quick scoring drives of five plays or less to end any suspense before halftime. Three of the scoring drives came in the final 2:19 of the period. All told, Lamar scored 34 points on just 16 plays covering 274 yards to end the half.

Central (7-4), meanwhile, stalled out almost completely after tying the score at 7-7. The swarming Lamar defense completely shut down everything the Bobcats tried, holding Central to just 14 total offensive yards the remainder of the first half. The Bobcats did put together a number of sustained drives, but were only able to cash in once after giving the ball away four times with three fumbles and an interception.

Lamar drove 77 yards on its opening drive to begin the scoring, but San Angelo took advantage of a shanked punt to set up a 39-yard scoring drive to tie the game at 7-7 early in the second period. The Vikings struck quickly to take control back immediately, taking the lead for good on a four-play, 51-yard drive; then followed that with four more scoring drives before the break.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN: Lamar answered a game-tying drive by the Bobcats with five quick scoring drives in the final 10:49 of the first half.

PLAY OF THE GAME: With the score tied 7-7 early in the second period, Vikings quarterback Jack Dawson found Isaiah Neyor down the near sideline for 33 yards to set up a 12-yard run by Jordan Williams on the next play to spark 35 quick points before halftime.

OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Take your pick. Lamar running back Jordan Williams ran 17 times for 160 yards and scored three times. Wide receivers Cam Brady and Trevon West combined for eight catches for 156 yards and each scored twice. Quarterback Jack Dawson threw for 231 yards and four scores.

DEFEENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: The Lamar defense pressured the Bobcat backfield all night long, but linebacker James Grando stood, getting credit for a pair of fumble recoveries.

UNSUNG HERO OF THE GAME: San Angelo’s sophomore quarterback Malachi Brown found ways to move his team down the field, accounting for 74 yards rushing and 208 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

NEXT UP: Lamar will face Odessa Permian in the area round next weekend, possibly in Abilene. Site and time are to be determined.
