HS roundup: North Side too much for Carter-Riverside; Burleson, Guyer with big Ws

North Side used a strong running game to push the Steers to a 60-17 win over Fort Worth Carter-Riverside at Farrington Field on Thursday.

Steers quarterback Isaak Rosales led the attack, rushing for 163 yards and a score. He was complemented by running back Juan Salgado, who hit the 100-yard mark when he scored his second TD late in the first half. He finished with 130 yards and the two scores.

The North Side(2-3, 1-0 District 5-4A) outgained the Eagles 328-81 yards in the first half. Fifty-three of those yards for Carter-Riverside came on a run by Marvelle Jacobs.

The Jacobs run took the Eagles to the Steers’ 12-yard line where the drive ended on a muffed field goal attempt.

Demetric Johnson was able to put the Eagles on the board with a 2-yard plunge in the second quarter.

The Steers took a 35-7 lead into the halftime locker room.

Adarius Jennings led the Eagles with 145 yards rushing and an electric 70-yard scoring run.

DENTON GUYER 34, KELLER CENTRAL 13

Denton Guyer and Keller Central had one win between them in five tries heading into their District 5-6A opener.

It was close at halftime, but Guyer erupted for 21 third-quarter points to keep the Chargers winless in a 34-13 thumping Thursday at Keller ISD Stadium.

With a slim 13-10 lead at the half, Guyer (2-2 overall, 1-0 District 5-6A) pulled away with two Seth Meador touchdown catches, from 6 and 53 yards, off the arm of quarterback Eli Stowers. It was Meador’s second and third scores of the game after a 14-yard scoring run in the first quarter.

Stowers added a TD run late in the third quarter to ice the game.

D.J. Graham had 9 catches for 131 yards for Central (0-4, 0-1) and had the Chargers only touchdown on a pass from Gavyn White.

EULESS TRINITY 40, L.D. BELL 13

For the 21st consecutive season, the No. 8 Euless Trinity Trojans took care of their crosstown rival with surgical precision Thursday night at Pennington Field, dominating Hurst Bell for a 40-13 win in the District 3-6A opener for both teams.

The Blue Raiders (1-3, 0-1 District 3-6A) gifted the Trojans (4-0, 1-0) scoring opportunities with turnovers on their first two possessions, then gave away a safety and an extra point opportunity with bad snaps late in the game.

A Sebastian Tauaalo interception and big return on Bell’s opening possession set up the first of two Brandon Theus touchdown runs for the Trojans. A bad snap on a Bell punt attempt just moments later gave Trinity another short field and it was 14-0 just seven minutes into the game.

The Blue Raiders got their only score of the first half with a 75-yard march that ended with a diving catch of a 21-yard Mason Ornelas pass at the pylon by Zion Hardy. But Trinity answered immediately, grinding out 17 points in the second quarter to take a 31-7 halftime lead.

BURLESON 44, ARLINGTON SEGUIN 0

For the second consecutive week, Burleson’s defense pitched a shutout as the Elks defeated Arlington Seguin, 44-0, in a District 5-5A Division II game at Wilemon Field.

Burleson (5-0, 3-0) limited Seguin to 137 yards on 48 plays. The Elks defense has allowed two touchdowns this season.

The Cougars didn’t run their first play in Burleson’s territory until midway through the fourth quarter. Seguin ran a total of six plays in the Elks end of the field.

Burleson held the Cougars to six yards rushing on 16 carries.

KELLER TIMBER CREEK 14, NORTHWEST EATON 6

Keller Timber Creek running back Blake Irving had first-half scores of 5 and 2 yards as they held off Northwest Eaton at Northwest ISD Stadium.

Irving’s two scores were accompanied by only 38 yards rushing, but it was both defenses that kept the game close as there were only 286 yards of total offense in the entire game. Irving got the scoring started late in the first quarter, a 5-yard run, giving Timber Creek (2-2) the 7-0 lead, heading into the second. Irving again had a late touchdown run, this time from 2 yards out, as they increased the lead to 14-0. But Northwest Eaton kicker Dakota Lamb connected on a 35-yard field goal, shortly before the half, pulling them to within 14-3.

Starting the second half, Eaton (3-1) put their run game on the back of Titus Swen, who finished with 87 yards on the night, by far the offensive leader on the ground, as their first third-quarter drive went 38 yards in five plays, before Lamb had his second field goal of the night, this time a 36-yarder, and at the end of the third quarter, Timber Creek led 14-6.
