Burleson’s defense continues to dominate in shutout district victory

For the second consecutive week, Burleson’s defense pitched a shutout as the Elks defeated Arlington Seguin, 44-0, in a District 5-5A Division II game at Wilemon Field.

Burleson (5-0, 3-0) limited Seguin to 137 yards on 48 plays. The Elks defense has allowed two touchdowns this season.

The Cougars didn’t run their first play in Burleson’s territory until midway through the fourth quarter. Seguin ran a total of six plays in the Elks end of the field.

Burleson held the Cougars to six yards rushing on 16 carries.

Game was over when: Burleson wide receiver Aden Anderson got behind the Seguin defense on the first play from scrimmage. Anderson nabbed a pass at the Seguin 45 and raced to the end zone for a 59-yard score from Jacob Amador.

Play of the game: Facing a third-and-12 at the Burleson 33, Amador hit Jaden Dotson for a 40-yard gain that moved the ball to the Cougars 33. The Elks needed five more plays to go up 17-0 when Jaden Dotson scored from a yard out.

Offensive player of the game: Burleson quarterback Amador completed 11 of 16 passes for 151 yards and three passes. Anderson caught all three touchdowns passes. Anderson finished with six catches for 92 yards.

Defensive player of the game: Burleson’s Evan Baltazar fell on a loose ball late in the second quarter. With the ball at the Cougar 25, the Elks needed three plays, Anderson hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass for a 27-0 lead with 2:07 to play in the first half.

Unsung hero of the game: Burleson kicker Edgar Zaragoza booted field goals of 31, 27 and 22 yards and connected on all of his point after kicks.

What’s next? Burleson hosts Burleson Centennial at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5. Seguin plays at Cleburne at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5.
