Rogers, Johnson with last-second heroics in Lake Ridge’s thriller over DeSoto

Mansfield Lake Ridge quarterback Chandler Rogers took an awkward slide just over four minutes left in the game. He was attended to before walking off on his own power, but with a noticeable limp.

He returned after only one play and Lake Ridge fans were thankful.

Trailing 29-28 with 14 seconds left, Rogers threw a 35-yard touchdown pass in the only spot his receiver Keylan Johnson could get it, over two defenders and in the corner of the end zone with six seconds on the clock as Lake Ridge defeated DeSoto, 34-29, in District 7-6A play on Thursday at Newsom Stadium.

DeSoto, which trailed for most of the second half, regained the lead when Tyson Alexander scored on a 27-yard run with 1:28 left.

Rogers would hit Tameron Derrough for 20 yards on the game-winning drive, ran for a 15-yard gain on fourth-and-12 and made back-to-back six-yard passes before the TD to Johnson.

Rogers finished with 428 yards on 26 of 34 passing and four touchdowns. He also ran the ball 17 times for 68 yards.

DeSoto (4-1, 1-1) looked unstoppable through its first two drives of the game. A 10-play drive to start lasted over three minutes and 72 yards as Shun’Darion Ward hit Lawrence Alexander for a 17-yard TD.

DeSoto added a 23-yard field goal from Gerrit Blodgett to extend the lead 10-0 with 4:58 in the first quarter. DeSoto’s Zach Williams intercepted a Lake Ridge pass on its second drive, one that lasted 12 plays.

But the second quarter was the complete opposite with Lake Ridge scoring three times and DeSoto held to six points.

Lake Ridge (3-1, 2-0) cut it to 10-7 early in the quarter with a 2-yard TD run from Dewone Jackson.

DeSoto answered with a 12-yard TD pass from Ward to Bryon Hanspard for a 16-7 lead with 7:35 before the half.

Lake Ridge wasted no time to score again with three plays on the ensuing drive. Rogers connected with Jackson for a 44-yard pass and then hit Cotis Martin for a 34-yard TD just one minute later.

Tylan Johnson sacked Ward to force a third-and-long and DeSoto threw an incomplete pass on fourth down to turn the ball over on downs. On the next Lake Ridge drive, Rogers ran for a 23-yard gain, hit Derrough for 21 yards and passed an 11-yard TD to Johnson to give Lake Ridge its first lead at 21-16 with 2:15 in the second quarter.

Rogers and Kaleb Whitley hooked up for a 3-yard TD to give Lake Ridge a 28-16 lead early in the third.

Lake Ridge gained 543 yards. DeSoto finished with 510. Jackson rushed for 47 yards and had five catches for 137 yards. Derrough finished with five catches for 93 yards.

Ward threw for 249 yards on 30 of 40 passing and two touchdowns. Alexander had 15 carries for 144 yards and DeSoto had three receivers with at least six catches for 50 yards.

Both teams are back in action on Oct 12. DeSoto hosts Mansfield while Lake Ridge travels to Waxahachie.
