Burleson two-headed monster at RB storms past Waco University

Burleson junior running back Caleb Lewis carried the load in the first half and sophomore running back Jarrett Austin carried it in the second half and the Elks opened District 9-5A Division II play with a 51-6 over Waco University Friday night at Waco ISD Stadium.

Lewis scored the Elks first two touchdowns to help Burleson improved to 3-0 overall a 1-0 in district play. Austin added a score in the first half and found the end zone twice in the second half.

University (1-2, 0-1) suffered its first loss since snapping the state’s longest losing streak with a win over Austin Travis last week.

Game was over when: With 57 seconds left to play in the first quarter, Austin Jarrett scored from a yard out. Kicker Edgar Zarazoga then ran up the middle for the two-point conversion to put the Elks up 21-0. The big play on the five-play drive was a 35-yard toss from quarterback Jacob Amador to Aden Anderson that put the ball on the Trojans 1.

Play of the game: Facing a second-and-15 at the University 40, Lewis broke free up the middle and weaved his way through the Trojans defense for a 40-yard score. The touchdown scamper put the Elks up 7-0 with 8:53 remaining in the first quarter.

Offensive player of the game: Lewis had a big night carrying 11 times for 97 yards and two scores. Austin finished with 118 yards and three scores on 14 carries.

Unsung hero of the game: Burleson’s defense didn’t let the Trojans run a play in their territory. University finished the game with 51 yards of offense on 43 plays.
