Sooners commit simply too much for Arlington Martin to handle in Hebron victory
After waiting out a severe storm, Carrollton Hebron receiver Trejan Bridges helped the Hawks pour on the points. He scored on two long runs and a long reception as the Hawks defeated Arlington Martin 63-24 on Friday night in a non-district game at Hawk Stadium.
The game started 70 minutes late due to lightning in the vicinity. Martin (0-2) led 8-7 after the first quarter. The Warriors forced a safety and then scored on a 5-yard Julian Johnson run that was set up by a 69-yard kick return by Jonathan Carter following the safety.
Things changed in the second frame. Bridges, an Oklahoma commit, scored a 41-yard run and later reached high to snag a 23-yard fade from quarterback Carson Harris. Kicker Grant Paulette banged home kicks of 32 and 40 yards to add to the Hebron (2-0) second-quarter scoring. The Hawks outscored Martin 20-0 in that second quarter.
Hebron stayed hot in the second half, scoring 28 points in the third quarter, including a 52-yard run by Bridges.
Game was over when: Bridges caught a 23-yard touchdown pass with 2:15 left in the first half. That score gave the Hawks a 27-8 lead, and they never looked back.
Play of the game: Jaylon Lott set the tone for Hebron on the second play from scrimmage. He weaved his way 65 yards for a score. He started right, cut back left and outpaced a host of Warriors defenders on his way to the end zone.
Offensive player of the game: Bridges led the way for Hebron, rushing five times for 106 yards and two touchdowns and catching four passes for 64 yards and another score.
Defensive player of the game: It was a special teams play, sure, but Martin defensive back Placide Djungu-Sungu reached up to block a Hebron punt in the first quarter for a safety.
Unsung hero of the game: Paulette, the Hebron kicker, made two field goals in the heavy rain and also made six extra-point kicks.
Moment of the game: Bridges’ first touch of the game was an electrifying 41-yard run for a 20-8 Hebron lead. The senior showed why he is one of the most coveted recruits in the state of Texas, tallying three scores on the night.
Stat of the Game: 70, as in 70 minutes late for the opening kick because of storms. The game got underway around 8:40 instead of the scheduled7:30 start time.
Big picture outlook: Martin’s tough start to the season continues. The Warriors must find answers on both sides of the ball, after starting slowly on offense and defense for the second straight game.
What’s next? The Warriors have a week off before facing Rockwall in their final nondistrict game at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 at UT-Arlington. Hebron travels to Keller Fossil Ridge at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14.
