Mother Nature the ultimate winner in Mansfield Summit-Lake Travis showdown

Mansfield Summit faced the No. 2 Class 6A team in the state according to The Associated Press on Friday night at Newsom Stadium and walked away still undefeated.

Unfortunately, it was the weather that forced the Jaguars and Austin Lake Travis off the field. Lightning in the area stopped play with 3:43 left in the second quarter with Lake Travis holding a 14-0 lead.

The game will not count for Lake Travis (1-0) or against Summit (1-0) as far as records go. The game was also delayed at the start for 45 minutes as scattered showers dotted the area.

Game was over when: Mother Nature decided it was. But if not for a few dropped passes and key penalties by Summit, the Jaguars were in the game. Summit drove into Lake Travis territory twice only to lose the ball on downs, once at the Cavaliers 32 yard line and another at the 36.

Play of the game: On Lake Travis’ second drive, quarterback Hudson Card hit receiver Garrett Wilson twice on third downs to keep drives alive. The first picked up 16 yards to convert a third-and-12 from the Cavaliers’ 41. The second was for 19 yards on a third-and-13 from the Summit 35. Card, a University of Texas commit, carried it in from 2 yards out three plays later for a 7-0 lead with 3:17 left in the first quarter.

Offensive player of the game: Card was 11-for-18 passing for 83 yards and a 12-yard touchdown for Lake Travis. He also rushed seven times for 9 yards, including a 2-yard TD run.

Defensive player of the game: The Summit defense played tough despite the 14-0 score. The defensive front allowed 64 yards rushing and kept Lake Travis’ quarterback on the run, forcing him to throw the ball away several times. Summit forced Lake Travis to punt three times in five drives.

Unsung hero of the game: Summit quarterback Brysen McKinney didn’t have a ton of help from his receivers, with at least three dropped passes, but the Jaguars’ offensive line gave him ample protection. McKinney threw for 57 yards and carried five times for 25 yards in the shortened contest.

Moment of the game: Down 7-0 early in the second quarter, Summit faced a fourth-and-10 from the Lake Travis 36. A perfect pass from quarterback Brysen McKinney hit its intended target but fell incomplete at the 3-yard line. The Jaguars lost the ball on downs and Lake Travis proceeded to drive 64 yards in seven plays capped by the Card to Wilson touchdown pass.

Stat of the Game: Wilson, an Ohio State commit, had seven catches for 57 yards with many in key situations.

They said it: “In our book we took an ‘L’ tonight. We didn’t capitalize on some opportunities against a very good Lake Travis football team and you have to do that every opportunity you get against a team like that.” — Summit Coach Channon Hall.

Big picture outlook: If Summit can iron out some of the penalties, six for 45 in the game, and take advantage of open receivers, the Jaguars could challenge for a playoff spot. The Summit defense looks solid. Lake Travis looked a little sluggish, but with Card and Wilson look for the Cavaliers to make a deep playoff run.

What’s next? Lake Travis opens District 25-6A play at Austin Bowie at 8 p.m. on Sept. 14. Mansfield Summit will host Mesquite Poteet at Newsom Stadium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13.
