UIL football realignment: Appeals denied to Fort Worth ISD and San Angelo Central
Appeals by the Fort Worth school district to move undersized schools out of Class 6A — the largest in Texas — were denied by the UIL on Tuesday, and San Angelo Central will stay in a district with four Tarrant County teams for the next two football seasons.
The Feb. 1 UIL Realignment placed Fort Worth Trimble Tech and FW Young Men’s Leadership Academy — schools without attendance zones — in 6A with Fort Worth Paschal. The same thing happened to YMLA — which has 177 students — in the 2016 UIL realignment, but the Wildcats then were moved to all-FWISD District 7-5A.
Not this time.
YMLA, which made the 2017 playoffs, and Tech (1,699 students) stay in District 4-6A with Arlington High, Bowie, Sam Houston, Lamar, Martin, Paschal and North Crowley. Martin’s enrollment is 3,456.
“I’m just glad a decision has been made and we can move forward,” Bowie coach Danny DeArman said.
“We will abide by what the UIL has decided,” Sam Houston coach Anthony Criss added.
San Angelo Central was also denied by the UIL District Assignment Appeals Committee, which met Tuesday in Round Rock.
The Bobcats will stay in District 3-6A, with Hurst L.D. Bell, Euless Trinity, Haltom, Richland, Weatherford and Abilene High.
Round trip from Euless through Abilene to San Angelo and back, is 516 miles. According to Google maps, driving from Euless though Abilene to get to San Angelo takes 3 hours, 56 minutes, and it’s a distance of 258 miles.
San Angelo Central’s volleyball and basketball teams are also in the same district.
Also Tuesday, Everman was denied its appeal to move from 5-5A Division II in football, to 4-5A Division II.
