Kaufman holds off rally attempt from Springtown

Running back Jay Gasper rushed for three touchdowns and teammate Trey Collier threw for one score and ran for another as the Lions beat the Porcupines in the 4A Division I area-round game at the Birdville Fine Arts/Athletic Complex. Kaufman will meet Texarkana Liberty Eylau next. In the first half, Collier scored first on a 46-yard dash and then Gasper scored on runs of eight and 47 yards. The Porcupines were hurt by Casey Smith’s 85-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Porcupines fought back after the Lions had built a 28-0 lead, cutting the deficit to 38-24 on a 48-yard touchdown run by Cameron Rickett and a 46-yard field goal by freshman kicker Brandon Hall. Kaufman responded with two fourth-quarter scores to ice the game.

Key players: Rickett had 129 yards rushing on 23 carries and 3 touchdowns and caught four passes for 16 yards. Springtown quarterback Sawyer Drewry passed for 126 yards and rushed for 54. Gasper gained 219 yards on 23 carries. Collier rushed for 134 yards and passed for 66.

Key stat: Kaufman totaled 401 yards rushing on 39 carries; Springtown rushed for 199 yards on 46 attempts.
