Northwest finishes strong in win over Azle but misses playoffs

Justin Northwest rolled out to an early lead and kept the cushion as the Texans beat Azle, 49-7 at Northwest ISD Stadium.
Northwest needed a 15-point win to make the playoffs and raced out to a 15-0 lead. A Haslet Eaton win over White Settlement Brewer kept the Texans at home in the postseason, though.
The Hornets were able to keep DeMareus Hosey and the Northwest running game in check most of the night, but Hosey had two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter and quarterback Prince Mavula had a huge night.
Key players: In addition to Mavula’s big night (29 of 36 for 375 yards and three scores, plus a rushing touchdown), receivers Leo Saldana (nine catches) and Quentin Lee (10 catches) each had 136 receiving yards. Stegall had eight catches for 92 yards and the score. Northwest’s Hosey finished with 114 yards and three scores.
Key stat: Northwest kept Azle to 195 yards of offense, 65 of which was on the ground.
