Northwest quarterbacks team up for four touchdowns in win against Alvarado

Quentin Lee caught three touchdown passes and teammate Leo Saldano contributed two more to lead host Northwest over Alvarado, 35-20, for the second year in a row in a season opener Friday night. Alvarado, a Class 4A school, kept pace with Northwest, a 5A school, until late in the first half. Then the Texans took the lead for good, 21-14, with 1:31 left off of a 41-yard pass to Saldano from Austin Ahmad, a sophomore. In the second half, senior Prince Mavula replaced Ahmad.
Key players: Demarcus Hosey was a workhorse for Northwest rushing 30 times for 142 yards. Ahmad was 12-18-0 passing for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Mavula was 10-12-0 for 87 yards also for a pair of touchdowns. Jacob Shockley rushed 14 times for 123 yards for Alvarado.
Key stat: Both teams advanced to the area round in the playoffs last year. In the season opener last year, Northwest beat Alvarado by seven points.
Records: Northwest 1-0, Alvarado 0-1.
