DeSoto secures first-ever spot in championship game
DeSoto got a pair of fourth-quarter fumble-return touchdowns 23 seconds apart to turn a three-point deficit into a 42-31 lead and eventual victory over Klein Collins in a Class 6A Division II state semifinal Saturday at NRG Stadium in Houston. The Eagles meet Katy Cinco Ranch or Cibolo Steele in the final Saturday at AT&T Stadium. It’s DeSoto’s first title game appearance.
Key players: DeSoto quarterback Shawn Robinson, a TCU commit, had 247 total yards and a rushing touchdown. DeSoto defensive back Byron Hanspard, Jr. (son of former Texas Tech great Byron Hanspard Sr.) had two interceptions in the second half. Bryson Powers, who spent most of the year at quarterback for Klein Collins, ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns and chipped in 47 receiving yards.
Key stat: DeSoto forced five second-half turnovers, four in the fourth quarter alone.
