Mansfield Legacy dominates both sides of ball in rout of Spruce

Mansfield Legacy played the bully in a 69-0 victory Friday over Dallas Spruce in a Class 5A Division I Region II area round playoff game at Newsom Stadium in Mansfield. The Broncos built a 35-0 halftime lead, thanks to 123 first-half rushing yards from Broncos running back Kameron Sessions, who then opened the second half with a 75-yard touchdown sprint. Legacy rolled to 551 yards of offense (413 on the ground) while its defense held Spruce to 95 total yards in the contest. The Timberwolves only managed three yards and no first downs in the first half.

Key players: Sessions tallied 198 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Broncos quarterback Kendall Catalon completed 9 of 12 passes for 100 yards and two TDs before coming out after the first drive of the second half. Backup running back Zayron McGriff sparkled in the second half, scoring three times and rushing for 136 yards.

Key stat: Leading 7-0 in the first quarter, but stalling on their second possession, Legacy defensive back Jalen Catalon intercepted a Spruce pass and returned it 56 yards for a score and a 14-0 lead to set a dominant tone on both sides of the ball. The Broncos had 23 first downs in the game, including 13 in the first half, while Spruce did not convert a first down until midway through the third quarter. With several backups in the game in the second half, Legacy's offensive firepower did not slow down, nor did its defensive intensity.
