Aledo starts slow but romps past Wichita Falls in playoff opener

The state’s top-ranked Class 5A team opened slow but was anything but stalled in rolling up 616 total yards in an expected blowout victory, 63-20 against overmatched Wichita Falls Rider in a 5A Division II Region I bi-district game Thursday at Northwest ISD Stadium. Bearcats quarterback Dillon Davis had three touchdown passes, including a second to Preston Jefferis of 55 yards 8 seconds before halftime.

Key players: Davis was 8 for 15 for 268 with TD passes to Hunter Rosson (four catches, 114 yards) and another to Jefferis for 51 yards. Bearcats RBs Jase McClellan and Donnie Evans were an effective tandem. The freshman McClellan had 129 yards on 18 rushes and two TDs, while Evans had two TDs and 74 yards on 13 carries. Brannon Webb and Logan Childs each had an interception for Aledo. For Rider, Bryce Hughes opened the scoring with a 65-yard TD on a fake punt.

Playoff scenarios: The Bearcats meet the winner of Friday’s Grapevine-Fort Worth Southwest game in the area round.
