Brewer mistakes play major role in Ryan win

White Settlement Brewer had a few opportunities to upset Denton Ryan in Thursday’s Class 5A Division I bi-District playoff game, but faltered in a 54-13 loss at Brewer Bear Stadium. Brewer fumbled just outside the red zone and had a punt blocked and returned for a score in addition to other miscues. The turnovers halted most of the Bears’ momentum that was keeping Ryan in check early. Ryan took advantage of two fumbles and the blocked punt in the first half to post a 26-0 halftime lead. Ryan will next meet the winner of Friday’s Fort Worth South Hills-Richland game.

Key players: Christian Calton managed the majority of the rushing yards for Brewer, finishing with 69 yards. Bears QB Carson Ingram completed four of nine passes for 66 yards. Ryan quarterback Spencer Sanders passed for 214 yards and two scores in addition to rushing for 60 yards and two touchdowns.

Key stat: Neither team had a rusher over 100 yards, although Ryan amassed 257 yards while Brewer ran for 206.

Records: Denton Ryan 11-0; Brewer 4-7
