Girls basketball playoff recap: Lake Dallas shocks Legacy, teams headed to quarters
Lake Dallas won its first-round game earlier in the week, a first for the girls basketball program in 12 years. But its magical season appeared to be at its end when Mansfield Legacy led 40-34 late in the fourth quarter.
Legacy led by six with 3:28 left after Savannah Catalon hit back-to-back baskets that gave her a team-high 17 points.
The Falcons called timeout. Then they got hot.
Lake Dallas scored the final nine points, including the go-ahead layup by sophomore Jorja Elliott with six seconds left to stun the Broncos, 43-40, in a Class 5A Region 1 area round game at Southlake Carroll.
The Falcons (26-8) advance to the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2008. They will await Friday night’s winner between Boswell and Crowley, which is set to tip at 8 pm at Aledo.
“These kids just fight and they’re so resilient and they persevere. They’re never down and out,” LD coach Jordan Davis said. “We told them if there’s still time on the clock, they have a chance.”
The comeback started when senior Dorian Norris, who had a team-high 17 points, hit a 12-foot jumper to cut the deficit to four. Then sophomore Bailey Broughton took a pass from senior Josephine Elliott and drained a 3-pointer from the right wing to get Legacy’s lead down to 40-39 with 20.1 left.
Then the Broncos (20-14) missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Elliott threw up a pass to Broughton near the top of the key and Broughton took one bounce and hit an open Jorja Elliott, Josephine’s sophomore sister, for the game-winner.
Legacy couldn’t cleanly in bound a pass on the ensuing possession, and Norris added a put-back layup with the Falcons at the free-throw line. Legacy’s final shot came up well short.
“Bailey’s 3 was huge. She had four fouls and had to sit for awhile. Then she had the confidence to knock that down,” Davis said. “These girls set goals in the beginning of the year and they wanted to go on a deep playoff run. They’re just hungry and want to win.”
Jorja Elliott scored 15 points for Lake Dallas.
Frisco Lone Star 46, Highland Park 40
Former Mansfield Timberview assistant Todd Monsey and his Rangers took down the Scots as the program advances to the regional quarterfinals for the fourth straight season.
Lone Star (22-9) will play Denison (20-15), a 55-38 winner over Dallas Wilson, in the 5A Region 2 quarterfinals.
Both teams struggled from the field through the first three quarters. Then both exploded in the fourth with HP winning the final frame 23-21, but it wasn’t enough.
Three Rangers scored in double figures, led by 13 from Kyla Deck. Halley Carr and Makenna Long added 11 and 10.
Argyle 51, Snyder 27
The fifth-ranked Lady Eagles took care of business against Snyder during a 4A Region 1 area round game.
Argyle’s quest for a seventh straight trip to the state tournament is still alive. The Lady Eagles (29-6) have won a state title in five consecutive seasons.
SMU bound Rhyle McKinney scored a game-high 21 points while Bailey Timmons and Hailey Lavelle added 15 and 11.
Argyle led 24-9 after the first quarter and held Snyder to 1 point in the third.
